It's Memorial Day in the States, a time to remember those who have died while in military service. Who would you like to remember today?

I don't have specific names to give here, although I'm sure others do, but I'd like to remember all those from disempowered groups of various kinds (racial, religious, gender and sexual orientation, and so on - I couldn't possibly list them all), who may have been viewed within society as "not good enough" for full participation in the political life of this country due to their membership in a particular group, but were still "good enough" to fight and die for this country.

Let's try to remember that those who died in military service did not die only for the right of blond, blue-eyed heterosexual boys to wave the flag, drink beer, and call other people names. (Maybe some did fight and die for exactly that, but not all.) Freedom is for all of us, especially those who are "different." That's what makes it freedom.
